Last week, I asked Tony, our animator, if I could “get him coffee or anything” because he looked tired. When he refused, I stood on my chair and yelled:

“Hello? I’m the intern here! I haven’t done any intern-ly tasks all Summer. Where are the papers I should be filing? Why don’t I know your coffee preferences by now!?”

Ok, so I didn’t really stand on my chair, but did I realize that I’ve been interning here for 3 months now, and never had that “internship experience” that my friends complained about. I was immediately treated like a team member, never called an intern, and honestly, I forgot that I wasn’t on staff. I jumped right into projects that went directly to clients, and was never given busy work.

At the beginning of the summer, I had never touched PHP, AJAX, or WordPress, and thought of JQuery as something I just copy and paste from the Googles. I was intent on learning these technologies, but didn’t expect to do so at my design internship. Well, somehow, this “design internship” turned into a development internship the second that I mentioned I wanted to work on coding, and I was able to learn things I really wanted to learn, but didn’t have the option to take a class in.

I created emails, worked on finishing/ tweaking existing websites, and by July, was given the task to do all of the front end development, from start to finish, of a client’s website. I even proposed an interactive infographic directly to a client, and was trusted to design/implement the entire thing. I created several WordPress blogs (Specifically, four in one week, the weekend after I learned how to use it) and worked with PHP and AJAX for the first time. I am so proud to now say that I can write my own functions from scratch, and I’ve even redone my person portfolio with the new skills I have learned.

This may all sound like strange, technical jargon, and yes, I did work exremely hard here, but the staff also knew how important it was to just relax and hang out sometimes. The best part of this internship was that I got to do what I loved, every single day, with a really wonderful team of people.

Thank you, MOS Creative for being so friendly and patient with me while I bombarded you all with questions. I specifically want to thank Greg (who asked me to refer to him as “Mentor Greg” for the purposes of this blog post) AKA the developer at MOS. He didn’t get frustrated and take over my keyboard as I retyped the same line of code six times because I’m stubborn and wanted to do it myself.

I learned a lot, laughed a lot, and think I may have even taught the team some things, too. I’m going to miss you all SO much!

If you’re interested in an internship at MOS Creative, you can go here to apply. I really hope your internship experience will be as wonderful as mine was.
